Papers, 1901-1982.

The Paul C. Taff Papers consist of clippings, Extension photographs, booklets, pamphlets, and correspondence. Many of the papers relate to the development of the 4-H movement, the Iowa State Extension Service, and the national Catholic Rural Life Conference. There are extensive files relating to the early history and growth of the boys' and girls' club meetings in Iowa. Secondary research conducted by Taff and others related to 4-H beginnings is documented. These files include information on Iowans Oscar Herman Benson, Jessie Field Shambaugh, Cap Miller and other club pioneers, including W.B. Otwell of Illinois and A.B. Graham of Ohio. There are manuals and organizational materials related to 4-H clubs, 4-H photographs from 1905 to 1965, and records of the Jasper County, Iowa 4-H group, the "Sunbonnet Sues (1963-1978) as well. Extension information consists of bulletins and pamphlets related to field days across Iowa. Of special note are materials documenting Taff's work on harvest home picnics, the Youth Committee (1940-1950), and the "Pig Crop Special Education Train." This train traveled across Iowa in the fall of 1929 on the North Western and Burlington lines promoting better hog farming. The harvest home picnic materials include posters promoting the events. Extension photographs cover from 1905 to 1965.

Paul C. Taff received a B.S. in agriculture from Iowa State University in 1913 and an LL. D. from Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa in 1949. Taff trained under Perry G. Holden and became assistant director of the Iowa State Extension Service, 1917-1952. He was an associate and extension professor of farm crops and soils, 1912-14, and acting director, May - September, 1914.
